Production Notes

Hey everyone, I thought I’d throw together some production notes on the making of this video. Very rarely is the process flow of a production shared with the public. But I thought it might be interesting for some to see how a production is put together including not only the successes, but also the challenges we face and how we overcome them. If you are reading this and have any suggestions or comments, I would love to hear them.

Script ImageSo I took an extremely productive trip up to Boston last week to meet with Harrison and start the scripting & editing process. I was only there for 24 hours, but we managed to crank through all the chapters and patient interviews. We scoured all the interview transcripts and picked out interesting stories and comments as they related to each of the chapters. This sounds simple, however, one of the biggest hurdles we’re going to face is managing the length of the final product. There are so many relevant details and interesting stories, but at the end of the day, we only have between 60-90 minutes to encapsulate this info. So we’re going to have to be choosy. In this first iteration, we picked everything we thought was relevant and interesting. So the length of the movie with all the clips we picked will probably be over 3 hours long!

Here’s where my job begins. I have to whittle these chapters down to extremely concise, interesting stories that also carry the chapter’s theme and focus. I’ve been working on that and have put together a very rough sample of the first chapter. It’s going to need much massaging and manipulation before it becomes the final.

It’s interesting because as an editor, I can see the diamond potential that lays in a rough cut. It’s much harder for others to see this especially because these rough cuts lack music, finessed editing and graphics that really polish and tie everything together. But Harrison is a quick learner and I’m sure he’s going to pick that skill up in short order.

So far so good, I’m working on the second chapter now.

Hope everyone is well.
